Out of Context

In my last blog, I talked about the crazies, and my sister made a good follow up remark that the Jews are just defending themselves. She makes a good point-I am not entirely wrong, but the Arabs do seem to be led by a group that refuses to compromise.
However, that does not exempt the Jews from having their own crazies. The Jewish Review, which I would NOT consider mainstream news media, has been reporting about a group of hard-line Jews in Israel, who are being very demanding about how that country is run. They were upset when more liberal Jews opted to sell bread during Passover, and they have objected to women praying at the Western Wall. In fact, they have called for laws to make sure that the country is run the way THEY want things. Um, I don't see how that is any different than the Taliban?

You started good and yes I will agree that some people run a hard line. Some hard to the right and some hard to the left. However, women DO pray at the Kotel (Western Wall) DAILY ALL DAY. Mom and I have been there several times. Some women however, do not want separate seating. These women are the minority not the majority.
Yes, some people want things run the way the want it, according to religious observance. How is this different than the many voices of America who want or are against abortion, gay marriage and so on? Further more how is this different than the Taliban?????????????!!!!!!? We don't kill people for not observing our way of life! Israel has a wide variety of people here who are ALLOWED WITH OUT HARM to pray where they choose, to what ever diety they choose, they dress how they choose, including shorts, t-shirts, slut clothes, ugly clothes, conservative........and so on. The religious Jews ask that the sanctity of certain things be protected. Very few things considering the number of people in a country the size of the Willamette Valley. The Western Wall is the base of where the original 2 Temples stood. Some things need to be preserved and respected they way they were meant to be. There are plenty of other ways for women and men to express their way of practice of Judaism or lack there of or other religion for that matter. Not everything needs to be liberalised. And by the way I like the Jew Review, it keeps me posted on PDX, but they are a liberal slant and don't always give the whole picture. I recommend Arutz Sheva for the right wing and the Jerusalem Post, both of which can be found on-line under those names. It will give you a good picture of what is doing here. OR you could just ask me about the things that you read.......Every race, religion, country, has crazies in it. Do the crazy people ruin it for everyone? They can be a challenge, but to what is crazy to one person is normal to another. The joy of diversity is that it hopefully it gets us all to think! If nobody was 'crazy' and just went along with the staus quo nothing would change! Think civil rights and womens' lib! Thanks for another thought provoking blog. It gives me the opportunity to educate all of your adoring fans.

Love, your adoring sister!

No one is disputing htat the USA has numerous religions, or that Israel doesn't either. And I am not disagreeing that ALL VOICES are agitating here, just like there. But when a CHRISTIAN man guns down a abortion doctor, he is one of the crazies. When a group of hard-line Jews want their law imposed on everyone, they are one of the crazies. I am not disagreeing with you that there are many voices, I am just saying that some of those voices are nuts.

Oh, and ALina, you and Mom were both the ones that said I should read the Jewsih Review. if you don't liek it, why reccommend it?

Yes, I will agree with the abortion doctor shooting, but since you do not live here, and do not come to visit, I think it is hard for you to comment on the requests of the "crazies". Israel was settled as a JEWISH STATE. Israel excepts a wide diversity of people who are free to live how they choose but it is a Jewish State. Some of us would like to see it kept that way. Just like people would like to see America kept in its original state. Often by asking for the maximum, a compromise in the middle can be worked out. Just like asking for the highest dollar amount while really only expecting something less, but more agreeable. As for your third comment, all is have to say is "DOH!" You got me there. I thought it would help you see what happens here, but apparently I am wrong, or perhaps, we all take from the news what we want and ignore the rest. Keep reading the Jew Review, but remember to keep an open mind. As with all media it is not the whole story.
